Boy, I feel all confused right now. I have never really posted to a board like this on a regular basis and am feeling like a real newbie. I suppose it will just take time to get used to my way around here. What I seem to be doing is checking subjects out and I read and reread posts over and over again. Is there a way to read only what is new? and how to I know what is a new post since I was here last? H-E-L-P

Mart, see the "new messages" thread in this forum. Basically, just check the forums list for a blue dot next to the forum name, the threads lists in the forum for a blue "new" next to threads that have new posts. If you've been logged in for a while, just refresh the pages to see posts new since you logged in.
Also, if you look at the bottom of the home page, there's a link to the 10 newest posts and a link to the newest post.
By the way, see the little notify button on the threads? If you click that and then "yes" you'll be notified by email any time there's a new post in that thread. You can do the same by checking a box any time you post a new post.

Thanks Diane for your help. I sure do apreciate it. I suppose all the old computer people are used to these boards. Must be a bit like the old bulletin board system. ? ;D

Well Mart, not to fret, I'm actually feeling a little queezy blipping around these boards too - haven't a CLUE what I'm doing!!! If you don't think me too weird, it's a little like what I imagine the "after-death" experience to be like!! We blip around "out there somewhere" just little particles of energy and then bit by bit, we bump into each other and begin to "recognize" each other's energy and there we all are together!!!! We'll get it! I just feela little "public" and don't know how to handle this just yet. Willa vent stay "there here" for a long time?....or well, how do we make these things go away and how the hell do we "mark as read" - could not find that in help area. And can you guys "see " this, are we all "here"? Are we mostly in nitty gritty, is that where we'll all go when we get down to the usual conversations?....And will newbies be out in the outer sanctum until we know they're not dhs? Blinks ...are these smilies just for PCs? How do I grab one? I need my shades!

Blinky, there's a mark as read button on the front page. Basically, if you've been reading posts for a bit and want to see if there's anything new, just hit the refresh button on your browser. No one will be allowed in the Nitty Gritty forum without going through the same process as we used on the list. Not foolproof, but we do have a couple of advantages here. First, we (meaning Beth and I) can see IP nos. so if they're on the same computer as their spouse, it will be a dead ringer. Secondly, it's a lot easier to get them off here if we do find an intruder. All we have to do is change the password, delete their membership and mass email the new password to everyone else. We can also ban them, which means they just flat out can't get back on here. The smileys are right at the top of the box where you write a new post. Just click on the one you like and it will be added to your post. Like this ;D

Thanks Diane!....but would you fill me in on when and how to do the "mark as read" button and how can we delete what we've read so we don't read it over and over? I see I can delete my own but not others just yet...bet I can - just don't know how...oh, and don't refresh a page while you're writing a post.....;that didn't work! lol!! But refreshing will...show me new posts?...we'll get there! Blinks quote author=Diane Blinky, there's a mark as read button on the front page. Oh, no, don't delete your posts, Blinky! This isn't like your email box. The posts stay where they are. The new threads or threads with replies get bumped to the top of the forum. If you delete your posts, nobody else will be able to read them. This will be nice because now if you want to go back and see what Mart wrote about bipolar or whatever, the back posts will be there and not taking up space on your computer. You can even search for posts on a specific topic. Yes, don't refresh while' you're writing a new post. ;D Just look for the blue dots next to the forum names and the blue "new" next to the thread titles to see what's new. By the way, if you're in say Nitty Gritty and you want to jump to Board Help, see that slender white box at the bottom right that says forum jump? You can use that to jump from forum to forum without going back to the main page. Periodically we'll have to clean out posts to make space but what I'll do is delete starting with the oldest. And hopefully we'll still be able to leave a lot where they are.
