You don't have to do anything, Blinky. Once you've read a thread, when you come back to that forum it will no longer have "new" next to its listing on the list of forum threads. Once you visit a forum, it will no longer have a blue dot next to it unless a new post has been posted since you last visited that forum.
To make sure a forum list of posts is correctly updated, after you read a thread, instead of hitting the back button to go back to the main forum list of post, click on the forum name at the upper left in yellow text.
Note that once you visit a forum, even if you didn't read all the new threads it will no longer have a blue dot. But the new marker will still be there in that forum's list of threads for any that you haven't read yet.
Try this and you'll see what I mean. Go to Nitty Gritty. Click on one of the threads that has "new" next to its subject line. After opening that thread, click on "Nitty Gritty" on the upper left to return to that main forum list. You'll see that thread no longer has "new" next to it. Now, post a new reply in that thread. It can just say "test post" if you want. Click on the yellow Nitty Gritty again. The thread will now again have "new" next to it.

I am fnding this is a real pain in the butt for me. Sorta time consuming I think. Even is these are marked as read, they do not go away and it appears to me I have to sacn down to the last message each time I want to see what is posted new. Is there no way to have the posts not show up once they are read, or to put the new posts on top instead of on the botton?

In a word - no.
Are you talking about figuring out which posts are new in a thread? Try jumping to the bottom and read up if it's a thread you've already seen.
The last one read is most likely only going to be one or two from the bottom.
The threads with the newest posts are bumped to the top of the forum but there's no way to reverse the order of the posts within the thread. And there's no way to make posts disappear for some members and not for others.

How come all of a sudden some thread(s) are marked as "new" when there's nothing new there? I have to go in every once in a while and click on "mark as read" to make the "new" go away.

I don't know. I've noticed that too. It's not anything I'm doing so it's something Proboards is doing. Just click on mark as read on the main page and that should show everything as read.

Also, when you have lots of forums and threads marked as new when you know they're not, just look at the date of the most recent posts. So, if you were last here yesterday, you know only the posts marked today and perhaps yesterday are ones you haven't read. Read the ones you want and then mark everything as read and you won't miss anything new.
